Man ‘carrying an axe’ arrested near Buckingham Palace by armed police

A man with an axe has been arrested on The Mall, near to Buckingham Palace.

Police officers were on patrol on The Mall at approximately 18.30pm on Tuesday 13 April when they spotted a man carrying an axe.

Armed officers on duty nearby rushed over and detained the man.

He has been arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon.

There are no reports of any injuries.

The man, who is believed to be in his 40s, was taken to Charing Cross Police Station for questioning.

The Mall stretches from the south west corner of Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace.

He was detained close to the Institute of Contemporary Arts, which sits roughly 800m from the palace gates.

The royal residence is not currently occupied by the Queen, who is in Windsor following the death of her husband Philip.

After the Duke of Edinburgh’s death was announced at 12pm on Friday large crowds gathered at Buckingham Palace to pay their respects to the 99-year-old.

Enquiries continue following the incident this evening, the police said.
